On April 15, 1926, Charles Lindbergh flew the first American Airlines flight – carrying U.S. mail from St. Louis, Missouri, to Chicago, Illinois. After 8 years of mail routes, the airline began to form into what it is today. American founder C.R. Smith worked with Donald Douglas to create the DC-3; a plane that changed the entire airline industry, switching revenue sources from mail to passengers.

Together with regional partner American Eagle, we offer an average of nearly 6,700 flights daily to 350 destinations in 50 countries. We’re a founding member of the oneworld® alliance, whose members and members-elect offer nearly 14,250 flights daily to 1,000 destinations in 150 countries.

American Eagle
American Eagle is a network of 6 regional carriers that operate under a codeshare and service agreement with American. Together they operate 3,400 daily flights to 240 destinations in the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico.

Envoy
Envoy Air Inc. operates 180 aircraft on 900 daily flights to more than 150 destinations around the world. The company’s more than 15,000 employees provide regional flight and ground handling services to American under the American Eagle brand.
Envoy is headquartered in Irving, Texas, with hubs and maintenance facilities in Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago, New York and Miami. Other facilities are in Abilene, Texas; Bentonville and Little Rock, Arkansas; Columbus, Ohio; Marquette, Michigan; and Springfield, Missouri.
Trans-Pacific Joint Business Agreement
In February 2010, American Airlines and Japan Airlines (JAL) filed an application with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for antitrust immunity to create a closer relationship and a joint business agreement governing the operation of their flights between North America and Asia.
On October 6, 2010, the DOT granted the two airlines tentative antitrust immunity approval and permission to operate a joint business across the Pacific.
Today, American and JAL coordinate fares, services and schedules, offer customers reciprocal frequent flyer benefits and grant eligible customers access to the airport lounges of both airlines.
Trans-Atlantic Joint Business Agreement
On July 20, 2010, American, British Airways and Iberia received approval from the DOT to create a joint business governing flights between North America and Europe. As a result of the antitrust immunity, they expanded their global cooperation.
Finnair joined the partnership in 2013 and Philadelphia (PHL) and Charlotte (CLT) became the largest East Coast gateways to Europe; giving customers access to more than 100 destinations throughout North America with one-stop connections.
With combined operations, the joint business serves 29 destinations in North America and 25 destinations in Europe, operating nearly 100 routes between the two regions.
Trans-Pacific Joint Business Agreement
In July 2019, American Airlines and Qantas received approval from the DOT to create a joint business governing flights between the United States, Australia and New Zealand.
This partnership gives customers access to new routes and significant benefits not possible through any other form of cooperation.
With combined operations, the joint business expands the codeshare relationship with enhanced service, better schedules, additional loyalty benefits and continued investments in lounges, bag systems and other infrastructure.
